Short answer: In a world in which the number of sensitive electronic components is increasing rapidly, overvoltage protection is becoming very important. In EU countries it is a legal obligation. Overvoltages can result from atmospheric phenomena, various faults and switching/commutation phenomena even when equipment is functioning correctly. The standard defining the scope of testing is SRPS EN 61643-11:2013 – Low-voltage surge protective devices – Part 11: Surge protective devices connected to low-voltage power systems – Requirements and test methods.
